What 20mg/ml actually means

Nicotine strength and limits in the Dual 10K

The Dual 10K is fixed at 20mg/ml nicotine salt. That's the UK legal maximum, calibrated to match the satisfaction of cigarettes for typical smokers. Here's why that strength was chosen, who it's right for, and what to do if it's too much or not enough.

The number on the side of every Dual 10K pod is 20mg/ml. It looks small, but it carries a lot of context. It's the highest legal nicotine strength you can buy in a UK vape product, the most common pre-filled pod strength on the market, and the level Elf Bar's design team picked because it matches the nicotine satisfaction of a cigarette for the average ex-smoker. None of that means it's the right strength for everyone.

This page covers the three things customers most often want to understand. Why 20mg/ml is the legal cap in the UK, how to match your own usage to that strength or work out whether you need lower, and what overshooting feels like if the strength is too high for your nicotine background. The Dual 10K is fixed at 20mg/ml in its standard pods; we'll cover the lower-strength options at the end. For the wider context of UK vape regulation, see how the Elf Bar Dual 10K complies with UK vape regulations.

What 20mg/ml means in practice

The figure is a concentration: 20 milligrams of nicotine per millilitre of e-liquid. Each Dual 10K pod holds 2ml of liquid, so a full pod contains 40mg of nicotine total, split across the two 1ml chambers. Across the pod's roughly 2,500 puffs, that works out to about 0.016mg of nicotine per puff, of which only a fraction is actually absorbed by the body.

The relevant comparison isn't milligram-to-milligram against cigarettes (the absorption mechanics are different), but rather satisfaction-to-satisfaction. 20mg/ml salt nicotine, used at typical pod-kit airflow, delivers roughly the same nicotine experience as a cigarette every 10 to 15 puffs. For a 20-a-day smoker, this means the Dual 10K's nicotine satisfaction tracks reasonably closely with their cigarette usage.

Why salt nicotine matters

The "salt" in nicotine salt refers to a chemistry that changes how nicotine feels in the throat. Older e-liquids used freebase nicotine, which gets harsh at higher strengths, so most freebase products topped out around 18mg/ml in the UK. Nicotine salt, developed in the late 2010s, is gentler on the throat at the same strength, which let manufacturers go up to the legal 20mg/ml cap without the harsh inhale.

For ex-smokers, salt nicotine is generally better because it delivers more nicotine in fewer puffs without the throat burn that pushes people back to cigarettes. The Dual 10K uses salt nicotine throughout, which is why the 20mg figure feels noticeably smoother than older 18mg freebase devices used to.

Strength matching

What strength fits your usage.

Match yourself to the closest profile. The Dual 10K is right for the highlighted row; lighter usage often calls for a different format.

Profile
Recommended
Why
Non-smoker
0mg or N/A
Vaping is not recommended for adults who don't currently smoke. The Dual 10K's 20mg/ml is far too strong as an entry point and there's no health rationale for taking up nicotine.
1 to 5 cigarettes a day
6 to 10mg/ml
Light smokers tend to find 20mg/ml too strong. Consider a refillable pod kit with shortfill at 10mg or lower, or one of Elf Bar's lower-strength variant pods if you want to stay with the Dual 10K format.
6 to 14 cigarettes a day
10mg/ml
The middle-ground strength. The Dual 10K's 20mg/ml is workable but might feel a bit much in week one. Most users in this band can adapt to 20mg within a few days, but lower-strength variant pods are a gentler start.
15 to 20 cigarettes a day
20mg/ml
Dual 10K standard
The sweet spot. The Dual 10K was calibrated for this profile. 20mg salt delivers a satisfying nicotine hit comparable to a cigarette without overshoot. Most successful switches in this band don't need to adjust.
20+ cigarettes a day
20mg/ml +
Heavy smokers may find 20mg/ml satisfying or, occasionally, slightly under-strength in the first week. The legal UK cap is 20mg, so you can't go higher in regulated retail. Some heavy smokers vape more frequently in week one to compensate, then settle.

"The standard answer at our counter is: if you're a 15-to-20 a day smoker, the Dual 10K's strength is exactly right. If you're not, the device might still suit you, but the strength conversation gets more interesting."

Why the UK caps at 20mg/ml

The 20mg/ml limit is set under the Tobacco and Related Products Regulations 2016, which is the UK's domestic implementation of the EU Tobacco Products Directive (TPD). The EU set the figure originally; the UK retained it after Brexit and has kept it largely unchanged. The number wasn't picked arbitrarily. It was the level that:

  • Delivers cigarette-equivalent satisfaction for typical smokers, so vaping could function as an effective quit aid
  • Stays well below acutely dangerous nicotine exposure levels for adults using consumer products as designed
  • Aligns with the maximum salt nicotine strength that doesn't produce harsh throat-hit issues at typical airflow
  • Provides a clear regulatory line that makes black-market product easy to identify (anything labelled higher is illegal in UK retail)

The cap also matters for product safety. Salt nicotine over 20mg/ml is not necessarily dangerous in normal use, but the absorption rate gets unpredictable, and the UK regulator decided a clear limit was preferable to the high-strength market that exists in some other countries.

UK vs the world

How the UK compares.

The 20mg/ml cap is at the strict end of regulated markets. Three regions, three approaches.

United Kingdom

UK regulated

20mg/ml
Legal maximum

The TRPR 2016 cap, applied to all retail e-cigarette products. Every Dual 10K sold in a UK regulated shop is at this strength. Anything stronger labelled "UK" is either illegally imported or counterfeit.

United States

US standard

50mg/ml
Common strength

The US has no federal nicotine concentration cap for vapes. 50mg salt is the de-facto industry standard for disposables and pod kits. US visitors who try the Dual 10K often find the 20mg "weaker" than they're used to.

Black market

Unregulated stock

35-50mg/ml
Often undeclared

Illegal disposables seized in UK Trading Standards raids regularly test at 35 to 50mg/ml or higher, often with no labelling at all. The high strength is one reason these products produce stronger reactions than regulated alternatives.

If 20mg/ml is too strong

What overshooting feels like, and how to fix it

If you're a light smoker (under 10 a day) or a non-smoker who's tried vaping, 20mg/ml can produce uncomfortable but not dangerous overshoot symptoms within the first 30 minutes. They typically resolve within a couple of hours, but they're a clear signal you need a lower strength.

The fix is simple: step down to a 10mg/ml pod variant if Elf Bar makes one for your preferred flavour pairing, or switch to a refillable pod kit with shortfill e-liquid where you can choose 6mg or lower. Don't try to "tough it out" with 20mg; lower-strength options exist for a reason.

Mild nausea, often within 15 to 20 minutes of starting
Headache, especially across the forehead
Slightly racing or pounding heart
Dizziness or lightheadedness
Sweating or feeling clammy
Stomach upset, occasionally with mild vomiting

Stepping down over time

One of the genuine advantages of regulated UK vape products over disposables is that you can taper your nicotine intake over time. The standard taper progression for someone who's been on 20mg/ml for a few months and wants to reduce: drop to 10mg, then 6mg, then 3mg if you eventually want to step off entirely. The Dual 10K's standard pods only come in 20mg, so a full taper journey usually means moving to a different format (a refillable pod kit with shortfill e-liquids) once you're below 20mg.

There's no rush on this. Long-term vaping at 20mg/ml is not recommended in the same sense as long-term smoking is, since it doesn't carry the same health risks. The only reason to taper is if your goal is to be entirely nicotine-free. If your goal is just to be tobacco-free, staying on the Dual 10K at 20mg long-term is a reasonable place to land. Our team at the counter sees both patterns: people who taper out completely within 12 to 18 months, and people who stay on 20mg as a long-term maintenance dose without issue.

What about lower-strength Dual 10K pods?

Elf Bar produces variant Dual 10K pods at 10mg/ml for a subset of the official flavour pairings, available from regulated UK retailers. Stock varies; not every pairing comes in the lower strength. If you want to stay with the Dual 10K format but at a lower nicotine level, ask at the counter about which pairings are currently available at 10mg.

For anything below 10mg, you'd need to switch to a different format entirely. Refillable pod kits that take shortfill e-liquids let you mix to your preferred strength using a small bottle of nicotine shot added to a larger bottle of nicotine-free flavour. We cover the format trade-offs in Elf Bar Dual 10K vs refillable pod kits.

The short version

  • The Dual 10K is fixed at 20mg/ml salt nicotine, the UK legal maximum.
  • 20mg suits 15 to 20-a-day former smokers best. Lighter smokers may find it too strong.
  • The UK cap is 20mg/ml; the US has no federal cap and 50mg is common there.
  • Overshooting feels like nausea, headache, racing heart. Step down to 10mg if it persists.
  • Lower-strength variant pods (10mg) exist for some pairings. Below that, switch format.
